There’s a new siren song drifting across the San Pedro waterfront.
Ground has broken at AltaSea for Sirens by the Sea, the next chapter in Yolanda Regalado’s homegrown coffee story, and, if she has her way, something much more than a coffee house.
At a groundbreaking ceremony on the AltaSea campus, Regalado was joined by AltaSea founder and executive vice president Jenny Krusoe to mark the milestone.
The retired L.A. County sheriff’s deputy, who opened Sirens Java & Tea in the old News-Pilot building on 7th Street in Downtown San Pedro in 2015 and moved to the corner of 7th and Mesa in 2019, is bringing her ocean-minded brand to the 35-acre blue economy campus at the Port of LA, with doors expected to open by the end of 2026.
For Regalado, choosing AltaSea is deliberate. “AltaSea represents so much of what we believe in—community, innovation, sustainability, education, and the future of the blue economy,” she says. Set on the working waterfront, the shop will serve artisan coffee and tea in a space inspired by mermaids, the ocean’s future, and San Pedro’s maritime history.
Regalado is as much after connection as caffeine. She imagines Sirens by the Sea as a gathering place where entrepreneurs, students, scientists, artists, and longtime locals pull up to the same table, with sustainability running through it all, from thoughtful sourcing and waste reduction to the story of the coffee’s journey from farm to cup.
“Sirens by the Sea is not just about growing a business,” she says. “It is about creating something that belongs to the community and contributes to the future of the waterfront.” spt
